CHALLENGE
The fungi-related industry is expansive and far-reaching - yet there are only a few resources for investors and job seekers to find relevant companies. During a job search based in the EU, beginning in 2024, I wanted to ensure I was able to capture all of the amazing concepts I was seeing.
It also gave me a convenient excuse to use ChatGPT as a side-car developer to bring this neural net of companies to life.
GOALS
︎ Develop a visually interesting & inuitive way to navigate the various industries across the world
︎ Have the backend easily editable and modifiable in Google Sheets
︎ Use ChatGPT to functionally write the code necessary to bring the project to life
︎ Develop a working technical relationship with this tool to understand the current power of generative AI.
SOURCES
I sourced many of my companies through direct knowledge of them while in the industry (2022 - 2024 @ Smallhold).
MycoStories was also a big influence early on as well!
Apart from populating the underlying company database, most of my research was driven by on-going prompts with ChatGPT.
︎REFLECTIONS
Ok ok! AI is the real deal. This process was like having a very stream of conscious conversation with an amazing developer.
There were many times that it’s generated logic could have had unintended results, so I was able to reframe my question or modify the prompt to be more clear towards my end goal — but largely, it was a very pleasureable experience.
︎RESEARCH・︎IDEATE・︎ DESIGN
The underlying structure to the application is all powered by a single tab in a Google Sheet (a snippet of it below). I thought that this was clever because it is an easy to modify environment and most people are used to its interface.

Getting the generated physics of the ForceGraph (a react application that handles graphically rendered nodes) to play nicely was like working with a bit of clay.. but once I was able to learn a bit more about how ChatGPT was interpreting the prompts, we got there.

︎REFLECTIONS
Assuming you have enough basic structure behind how applications work, generating web applications alongside ChatGPT was a pleasure and I am excited to see how it evolves.
︎RESEARCH・︎IDEATE・︎ DESIGN
Once the company database was fleshed out, I hooked up the Google Sheet via the Google API keys which are then directly embedded into the .js React application. The .js application is then hosted on Git Hub Pages. Viola.
︎ Check out the live application here!
Alongside this environment, I created a Google Form that pipes new company entries directly into the backend sheet; so that admins (me for now) can add new companies and industries easily. I think that these type of tools are best built to be shared and collaborative.

I also generated a 3D version, mostly to play around with what that might entail from a UX perspective — it ultimately ended up being a bit confusing. Very cool looking though in a macro sense!
︎REFLECTIONS
Ultimately this was a pleasure to build and if it helps new investors or job seekers make sense of the various industries across the globe, it will have been worth the time. Thanks for checking it out and contributing.
